Nunez Community College is a community college found in Chalmette, Louisiana. The main campus of the school is in the St. Bernard Parish, just east of New Orleans. The full name of the school is Elaine P. Nunez Community College. The college was named after the deceased wife of President Samuel B. Nunez, a former Louisiana State Senator.
The school was formed by the 1992 merger of Elaine P. Nunez Technical Institute and St. Bernard Parish Community College. As a result, it offers both academic and vocational classes, a situation which is unusual within Louisiana. In 2005 it was heavily damaged by flooding due to Hurricane Katrina. However, it was able to resume classes the next year.
The school also runs the Nunez Foundation, which is a non-profit organization that provides and promotes several industry partnerships, school scholarships, and endowments to the college. Nunez and Lynn Dean, his former rival and successor as senator, are honorary members of the Nunez Community College Foundation. Both former senators are from the St. Bernard Parish.
Among the programs offered by NCC includes Business Technology, Care and Development of Young Children, Culinary Arts and Food Service Production and Management, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic, General Studies, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Industrial Maintenance, Louisiana Transfer Degree, Medical Billing and Coding, Natural Sciences, Nursing, Paralegal Studies, and Welding.
Students can avail of the school’s transfer program that allows students to use their 2 year degree as credit and enroll in 4-year colleges and universities and earn a 4 year degree. Most students can also avail of most of the work related courses offered and enter the workforce immediately after graduation.
